Cinegy Continued Commitment to Open Standards for Broadcast: SMPTE 2010
25 October 2010, LOS ANGELES — Cinegy (www.cinegy.com) will showcase the latest version of its award-winning media asset management and archive solution Cinegy Workflow at the SMPTE Annual Tech Conference & Expo, October 26-28 at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel in Hollywood.
Cinegy will be exhibiting at booth 101 on the show floor and CEO, Jan Weigner, will be presenting two technical papers at the conference. In addition to demonstrating Cinegy Workflow 8.5, the entire end-to-end solution for production, broadcast automation, playout and distribution, Cinegy will also be showing the new standalone ingest tool, Cinegy Capture.
Cinegy Capture is a completely new product family, built from the ground-up as an independent ingest tool using many of the industry-leading components developed for other Cinegy products. Cinegy Capture reinvents the acquisition and transcode process, unifying the task of ingesting material and generating edit or web proxies. No longer bound to a single machine, anyone can use Cinegy Capture as an appliance with the simple yet powerful cross-platform control client - whenever or wherever they need it. Just take a standard PC, add one or multiple SDI cards, install Cinegy Capture and start experiencing the benefits of cost effective, centralized ingest controlled by anyone in your workgroup.
Cinegy Capture is implemented using the latest service-oriented architectural principles, allowing Capture to be used as flexibly as possible, with support for open web services. Cinegy are also working closely with AMWA and EBU to make sure that Cinegy Capture is one of the first Cinegy products to adhere to the emerging Framework for Interoperable Media Services [FIMS] standards, designed to make it simpler for broadcasters to deploy and maintain complex systems. Using these principles, coupled with the advances made in modern computing power, this software-based platform can support both pre-existing ingest scenarios as well as offer support for a whole new set of uses, from OEM integration through to OB truck recording.
Broadcast Playout, Ingest & Trancoding as Open API based Scalable Software Services: Wednesday, October 27, 3:00 PM
This presentation will explore practical examples of broadcast media software services running in virtualized or cloud hosted environments using open, standardized media services APIs. Next, an overview of what exists in the market today as well as a discussion of several concrete deployment examples. Finally Weigner will examine the benefits and challenges of a migration towards a service oriented broadcast media environment and discuss the status of the international attempts to achieve common API standards for media services e.g. by AMWA and EBU. This will be followed directly by a presentation about The FIMS Project, delivered by Joey Faust (National TeleConsultants, Inc., USA) outlining the purpose, goals and scope of the task force, as well as providing a review of the results of the RFT process and discussing the FIMS roadmap.
GPU Accelerated H.264 Video Compression for Broadcast: Thursday, October 28, 8:30 AM
This presentation, in the Processing Architectures section of the program, will look at the potential that GPUs have for providing an abundance of computing performance at low cost. Weigner will explore to what extent the latest GPUs can be used for broadcast quality H.264 production and distribution encoding, in comparison to dedicated hardware encoders or CPU based solutions. After more than two years of practical development experience with the latest GPUs and CPUs a conclusion can be drawn about what can and cannot be done and where GPUs have yet to deliver on their promise.
