Russia’s VGIK Selects cinegy workflow for New 4 Billion Ruble Television Production Complex
Revered School Embraces “Tapeless” Broadcasting in New Training Facility

AMSTERDAM— Cinegy today announces that the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK), the oldest and most prestigious film and television school in Russia, has selected cinegy workflow to serve as the backbone of its new, multi-faceted television production studio. The move is part of a 4 billion ruble program to construct the most modern and sophisticated television production complex in Russia—and one of the most advanced in the world. The facility will be used both to train students in state-of-the-art television production, and to produce educational and entertainment content for broadcast in Russia and elsewhere.

“VGIK’s new facility will serve as a model, not only for the Russian broadcast industry, but for the world,” said Cinegy Managing Director Daniella Weigner. “cinegy workflow will facilitate true tapeless production from ingest through playout, while creating a non-linear working environment that will allow students to work collaboratively. It will help VGIK prepare its students to tackle the challenges of broadcasting in the 21st Century.”
The cinegy workflow installation will include six licenses of cinegy media desktop, Cinegy’s award-winning digital asset management solution, as well as cinegy media archive for central storage. Other components will include cinegy ingest, for real-time ingest of SD and HD media in virtually any format; cinegy convert, a transcoding server; and cinegy air, a multi-format broadcast automation and playout server.

Moscow based DNK Corporation and Matrix Engineering Group are serving as system integrators on the project, designing and installing the workflow products and providing training to VGIK staff.

One of the appeals of cinegy workflow for VGIK is that all of its components are software-based and run on standard PC hardware. “The fact that cinegy workflow does not require special hardware or software means that the university does not have to spend money on specialized IT equipment,” said DNK Corporation general director Aslan Molov. “It also makes the system flexible and upgradeable.”

The All-Russian State University of Cinematography was founded by the film director Vladimir Gardin in 1919 and is the oldest film school in the world. During Soviet times the film school was known as All-Union State Institute of Cinematography. Its distinguished faculty has included such famous directors as Sergei Eisenstein, Vsevolod Pudovkin and Aleksey Batalov. The institute became a university in 2008.
