Cinegy Claims World's Largest Tapeless Production System

With 400 concurrent Cinegy prdouction and editing desktops - and growing - Turkey’s Dogan TV Holding is believed to be the largest tapeless production system. The continued growth and expansion at Dogan TV is a testament to the success of the cinegy workflow solution as a world leading IT-based broadcast system. Due to its scalability, ease of use and cost effectiveness, with cinegy workflow in place, Dogan TV maintains and improves their leading position against competition in the broadcast industry.

Dogan TV is the largest commercial broadcaster in Turkey, offering a wide range of TV channels for news, drama, entertainment, music, sports and much more. From the initial Cinegy installment, beginning with just 70 concurrent Cinegy production and editing desktops, in a very short period of time, this number was increased, from 70 to 100, to 150, to 200, to 300 and now there are 400 concurrent users in the Dogan facilities.

“Everybody in broadcast operations (about 1000 registered users) is on the Cinegy platform” states Hasan Kiragi, Director of Broadcast Operations, Dogan TV.

As Dogan TV continues to grow - both by forming new channels and acquiring existing ones – the Cinegy platform easily expands with it, allowing the quick set up of new channels or easy integration of acquired channels. The existing system is simply expanded using ordinary IT hardware which is quickly deployed and set up.

Hakan Tumer, Head of Technology, Dogan TV said: “Cinegy is very easy to use for our colleagues, and it is easy to build up within a couple of minutes.  Also, for scalability and redundancy, we have a lot of opportunities to improve our system to increase our TV network.  Last year, we only had 4 or 5 TV channels; we now have increased our TV network to over 30 channels, easily and with a very cost-effective solution.”

With expansion posing no obstacle, Dogan TV has plans to double the number of channels to 60. Unlike traditional tape-based commercial TV stations, where space is paramount, with cinegy workflow, this is no issue. According to Hakan Tumer, “With only three computers, we can build a new TV station”. Naturally the cost reductions here are immense. When asked if they could have achieved this without Cinegy, Hakan Tumer responded, “No, I couldn’t… I can say that we are now discounting our operational budget by half.”

All of Dogan TV’s playout and broadcast automation needs are taken care of by cinegy air. The cinegy air control software provides the state-of-the-art control interface for controlling one or multiple cinegy air service playout channels connected via TCP/IP. In addition to the three major channels, Kanal D, Star TV and CNN Turk, Dogan TV are using cinegy air automation solution in the multi-channel environment to manage about 25 channels with only a couple of operators.

Hasan Kiragi talks about the comparison of cinegy air with earlier solutions used by Dogan TV; “First we used Cinegy as an archive solution and a desktop editing solution a couple of years ago.  We were using some stand-alone video servers and playout automation systems.  The problem was that all these parts were from different vendors, and we needed some serious integration.  We got to a point where it was not so easy to integrate everything and keep the workflow.  Then when cinegy air was launched as an on-air and automation system, we started using it in our multi-channel environment.  We find that it is impossible to compare what we had to have before to what we now have.  The system is now completely integrated, the workflow is much, much better and operationally it is very easy to use, and the cost benefits are much better.  We replaced all our systems in our facility, including for all our channels, with cinegy air playout and automation systems.”

cinegy workflow is a fully integrated end-to-end production solution, integrating a convenient, scalable digital archive solution for the whole group, with collaborative production and workflows, taking care of all elements of the production workflow from ingest to broadcast automation. cinegy air provides the broadcast automation front-end and the real-time video server for both SD and/or HD playout in one integrated software suite. The new multi-channel playout provides simultaneous broadcasting of different playlists in various TV formats to multiple channels.
